Our first field trip for Trash Trek was to the Republic Services Transfer Station to find out about our local trash issues. We met with Konrad McDannel for a tour of the transfer station, to learn how our trash is handled from the curb to the landfill, and if they have any trash issues they deal with at their facility.
Our team had brainstormed through some possible trash problems prior to our field trip. We thought that CD’s and DVD’s could be a large problem since they weren’t listed as a recyclable item on the recyclable item sticker that’s on the cart. We found out from Konrad that CD’s and DVD’s were not a trash issue since they could be recycled. The major problem that Republic Services faces is grass clippings in the trash and in the recycling.
